Emergency Response Planning
For information on Emergency Preparedness Response Requirements for the Petroleum Industry in Alberta please refer to AER Directive 071 by following this link: AER Directive 071.
Emergency Response Plans are vital to the Oil and Gas industry and are designed to protect the public safety, workers and the environment. All Oil and Gas companies in Alberta and British Columbia are required by their respective government regulators and agencies to create and maintain Emergency Response Plans. The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) monitors the petroleum industry’s emergency response activities in Alberta, outlining rules and regulations in their Directive 071. The Oil and Gas Commission (OGC) provides the same function for the industry in British Columbia. Pipelines crossing provincial or national borders are regulated by Canada’s National Energy Board (NEB).

Emergency Planning Zone Maps
The Emergency Planning Zone map is the foundation of a successful Emergency Response Plan. The entire ERP is built upon the contents of the map. Without an accurate, usable map, an effective ERP is not possible. Building a usable map requires thorough attention to detail regarding placement of true surface features and an accurate depiction of Emergency Planning information.
The Emergency Planning Zone map is a vital component of a system ultimately intended for prevention of the loss of life. There is no place for inexperience in the business of determining the balance of necessary information needed for effective emergency management. Emergency responders must have a clear understanding of critical evacuation routes and planning zone features in order to do their jobs effectively.
Experience has shown the map will likely be used under adverse conditions. Therefore the map must be clearly readable even when illuminated by a flashlight while spread across the hood of a truck and viewed through the face plate of a breathing apparatus. Real world knowledge of what works and what doesn’t is the key to good map production.

Check out our Gallery Page for some of the different types of maps that we can provide. All of our maps can be customized to our client’s specific needs.
Emergency Planning Zone (EPZ) Maps – showing all pipelines, wells and facilities that contain sour gas. These maps are much like a gathering system map, but their focus is on sour gas and the EPZ around the wells and pipelines that carry it. Resident locations (surface developments) are very important on these maps as they relate to the EPZ boundaries.
Resident Handout Maps – 8.5” x 11” maps that show sour wells and/or pipelines along with their respective EPZ and how they affect residences located within the EPZ.
